blocking a crochet scarf

In Belgium we have a chain of stores called 'Veritas'.  They started out as a shop where you would by buttons, zippers and panty hoses.  My mum would often go there, back in the old days when everything was much simpler.

The veritas management had it's finger on the pulse of modern life, and the shops regularly had 'updates', they added jewelry and knitwear to the assortiment, bags and scarfs, even underwear and bikinis.

The latest change is making the shops a real experience for crafters.  You find the nicest cottons and wools (even rowan in some shops !), they give lots of workshops - even for the little ones.  One of their flagship stores is in Brugge, a town near where I live. 

 Every time I go to Brugge, I can't resist going to the new veritas.  So, last time I picked up a free pattern for a crochet scarf.  I choose a nice pale cotton, and set of to make it. 

A triangular scarf, starting at the bottom point : in the beginning the rows go quickly, and the scarf takes it shape. but those last rows, OMG, they are endless. I took this project with me on the train, in the car, to my work....

Nevertheless, I finished it in just over 4 weeks.  As it has a lace-effect and a lace border, it needed blocking.
So this is what I did :

old foam toys from the kids, put up in the correct shape

I put a big towel over it

spray water over the scarf to make it wet, and started pinning

take care you pin down every point

it's really a lot of work

finished !

I put it up against the wall for a couple of days, untill it's really dry.  Remove pins and there you have the scarf, perfectly blocked.

Elle Tricote !

On the French site of  elletricote there are a few amazing paterns. The scarf 'Piora' , a triangular winter scarf in mohair and wool caught my attention.  Originally made in Lang wools, I thought it was a nice pattern to use up some of my gigantic pile of stash....

So, this is my version : I had some grey/brown mohair with  82 % pure wool. It changes from brown to beige to grey.  I added some  light grey bouclé from Bergère de France, and inbetween those yarns I knitted a fine ribbon in off white with a little bit of gold.

A nice warm item to put around your shoulders on a cold spring day.
There are 3  frills (is that the correct word?  We call them flosh) at each of the 3 points of the triangle.  I added a big pearl before I sewed them on. 

 All increases are at the sides and in the middle.
I like the change of colour, yarn and stiches. the rows with the 'balls' are fun to make.  It makes it a knit with a lot of alternation.
I finished it in 4 days, and I only knit in the evening in front of the TV.

it has a good length for me, I'm rather tall.

Baktus finished !

I am proud to present : my first Baktus is finished.

I really enjoyed knitting this scarf, it is sooo easy, all stiches are knitted, there is no purling involved.  You can find the free pattern on ravelry here !

I used 4 skeins of peruvian merino wool I had in my stash, 2 brown, 1 orange and 1 dark green.
And the result is :

I am wearing it in the morning, when I cycle to my work.  It keeps me warm and is light to wear.

a beaded moebius

It is finished, the moebius scarf I started in Swalmen.

The wool I used is Zitron unisono, in different blues.   It was cast on in a very special way, (CO 100 stiches, but they turn out to be 200 stiches to knit... ) on circular needles, size 3.5 mm

I decorated it with beads, while knitting:  a quick technique involving a crochet hook. 
At a certain point you split the knitting and form a point.  I added some more beads there, for an extra accent.

After this project, I'm as good in knitting and purling on circular needles as on regular needles.  It took some stubborn persisting, but now i'm proud of myself.  I find it hard to try out a new way of knitting when I'm quite satisfied with the way I always do things.  But this was an eyeopener.

The result is really nice, but with 30 °C outside, I couldn't put it around my neck for a picture. 

breivakantie in Swalmen

Ik ben net terug van een heerlijke week vakantie in het groene Swalmen.  Dat ligt in Nederlands Limburg, vlakbij Roermond en op 4 km van de Duitse grens.

Samen met mijn brei-vriendin Pascale zijn we maandag vroeg vertrokken uit Oostende,  de hele rit aan het  fantaseren over wat ons te wachten stond.  Voorpret hé.

Met de gps behoorlijk gemakkelijk het Groenewoud gevonden. (2 x klein beetje  verkeerd gereden, tja, 2 vrouwen ....) en onmiddellijk kennis gemaakt met de brei - brigade onder leiding van Myriam Tegels, onze expert - teacher  voor deze week.

We waren met 8 dames, sommigen kwamen voor de 2e of zelfs 3e keer.  Frans, de man van Myriam had superleuke naambordjes gemaakt voor iedereen.  Het ijs was snel gebroken : de koffie stond klaar en een stuk heerlijke vlaai - die Limburgers weten wel wat lekker is !
We kregen onze kamer toegewezen en daar stond al een grote cadeau-tas op ons te wachten.

De firma Pony sponsort de breiweek, en ook de wolshop Filarte uit Roermond had er wat leuks ingestopt. 

We kregen een beschrijving en alle benodigdheden

We hebben de hele week genoten : zowel van het gezelschap van de andere dames, als van de boeiende lessen en nieuwe technieken om heel wat vlotter te breien.

Af en toe kregen we wat zon, soms een bui, maar dat gaf allemaal niet. Er stonden ook leuke uitstapjes op het programma, een stadszoektocht in Rurmanj,  een stich 'n bitch café waar we kennis maakten met een grote groep breisters uit Duitsland. 

Als het weer wat minder was, mochten we in de grote 'kapel' breien.  Lekker warm, met de houtkachel aan....

Nu we allerlei opzet technieken, fair-isle kleurenbreien, de perfecte patentsteek, en de fijne kneepjes van de 'Steek' onder de knie hebben, was het tijd om afscheid te nemen.  Spijtig, want zo'n week samen je hobby beleven met andere gelijkgezinde mensen schept toch wel een band.

Voor mij was het een week van ontspanning (effe weg van de rompslomp thuis - doet toch wel deugd), een week van vriendschap, en vooral een boost voor mijn creativiteit met wol.

Met heel veel dank aan Myriam en natuurlijk ook Frans, die een stevige pot koffie kan zetten. Soms kregen we bezoek van een 'beest' (help !) en dan kon hij er vanalles over vertellen.

one scarf finished !

Winnie is a regular visitor of my knitting club.  She has been working on this scarf for a while, and has finished it yesterday.  It's in 2 colours red and gray, but the wool also changes from silky to fluffy.  It is a wonderful rich effect. 
Some time ago she went to a colour analist, and learned that she's a 'cold wintertype'.  So the strong reds and cool grays are perfect colours for her, that will match with a lot of her clothes.
She's proud of that scarf and wants to share it with you all.

A warm winter scarf to be used a lot
